With just about everything Apple has available able to talk to one another wirelessly, keeping a Mac as the media center is a great idea. Upgrading these to the newest OS possible and running Front Row is a great way to reuse older MacBooks and get great media access. The Mac Mini isn’t the only Mac that can easily be used as a media center, especially since many of us have older MacBooks sitting around collecting dust. If you’re enterprising enough you could even use your Mac Mini with OS X Mavericks Server and have it truly be the media hub of your house, serving up media to not only the television but to all the other Macs in your house.

You not only get access to the place you store most of your media, but Internet browsing and a variety of apps as well. Front Row was created to be an alternative way of using iPhoto, the DVD player, and iTunes.įront Row always ran as a full-screen app and was the easiest way of using many media features on the Mac without having to open up each specific app.

I also had to set the button ‘C’ on my ATI wonder remote to be escape so I could exit from Front Row. Then I just programmed my ATI wonder remote so that when I press the TV button it presses apple-F4 and launches Front Row. (Apple-escape clashes with Quicksilver)ĥ.
Went to the system preferences and selected keyboard shortcuts in ‘mouse and keyboard’ preference pane and changed it from apple-escape to apple-F4. DON”T DO THIS STEP EVER AGAIN or it can cause your menu to disappear or something like that.Ĥ. This I believe modifies some core services bezel file or something. Downloaded FRE.dmg and ran “Front Row Enabler” (this one has a nice icon and is diffferent to the above one) and then clicked the ‘install’ button. Installed Front row by clicking on the new modified installer on my desktop.
(Before this step I tried installing FrontRowUpdate and it said you require a G5 something or other imac to install.)ģ. Downloaded Enabler1.2.1.dmg and ran “Front Row Enabler” and selected “Enable Installation” which I believe hacks FrontRowUpdate that is on my desktop so it can be installed on any mac. Downloaded FrontRowUpdate.dmg from apple web site, and copied FrontRowUpdate.mpkg from the disk image to the desktop.Ģ. Here’s how I think I got it working, I tried a few things, this is what I think did it:ġ. I just installed Front Row on my non-front-row mac and it works with my ATI Remote Wonder USB Remote Control.
