Supporters were buoyed by Kemp’s promise on the campaign trail last year to support tough abortion laws. The American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia has vowed to challenge the law in court. House Bill 481, signed into law May 7, outlaws most abortions once a doctor can detect a "heartbeat" - which is usually at about six weeks of pregnancy and before many women know they're pregnant. Since enacting a law that outlawed abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy in 2012, Georgia lawmakers had had little success in introducing legislation to put further limitations on access to the procedure until this year. The six-week ban on abortions has been years in the making. Brian Kemp would not have been able to keep his campaign promise to sign one of the strictest abortion laws in the country. And the politicians who represent them wield the lion’s share of power in the state Legislature. Rural Georgians such as Packer are far more apt to say they believe abortion should be restricted or outlawed completely. What was found echoes the findings of the paper's most recent poll on the subject and illustrates the sharp divide on display in Georgia politics - especially during the last legislative session.
The AJC traveled across the state to get a more complete picture of how Georgians see the issue of abortion and the state's new abortion law. Abortion, she said, should be vastly limited. Like many of the rural Georgians who spoke recently to the AJC, Parker, a 39-year-old convenience store manager, says her Christian faith tells her that life begins at conception and therefore it is morally wrong to take the life of the unborn. Rural parts of the state also provided the political muscle that put in place the new restrictions on abortion. Jenkins learned here in Harris City, at his father’s side, helped make him into the successful entrepreneur that he became. Today, Publix is one of the largest grocery store chains in the nation. In 1930 he left Piggly Wiggly and opened the first Publix store in Winter Haven. He took a job with Piggly Wiggly, however, and after just a couple of months as a clerk he was promoted to manager. In the meantime, his son, George, Jr., graduated from Greenville High School and moved to Florida in 1925 to seek his fortune in real estate. George, Sr, moved to Atlanta and established a small grocery store, less susceptible to the ups-and-downs of the agricultural economy. The business thrived until the early 1920s, when the boll weevil signaled a collapse of the cotton-based agricultural economy.
Jenkins was a successful merchant, drawing shoppers from all over the area to Harris City. Jenkins, Sr., built Jenkins General Store with hand-cut rock to replace its wood frame predecessor.
